Ferro Silicon 72 Description
Ferro silicon is made by heating quartz and iron in special furnaces called submerged arc furnaces. These furnaces are heated to between 1,800 and 2,000 °C. Ferro silicon with a silicon content of 72% is widely used in the Pidgeon process for producing magnesium because it stabilises the reduction reaction. The alloy’s density (3.5 g/cm³) enables it to settle easily in molten steel. When making electrical steel, it is very important to use low-carbon variants (with less than 0.05% carbon). This is because carbon impurities can cause the steel to lose its magnetic properties.
