How Is Silicon Metal 553 Made?

Silicon metal 553 is made by heating and cooling a mix of silicon and carbon in a special process. High-purity silica, with an SiO2 content of 99% or more, is the main raw material. It is mixed with carbon-based materials like coke, coal, charcoal, or wood chips. These are carefully selected for high fixed carbon, low ash, etc. The mixture is then melted in a special machine called a submerged arc furnace. This furnace is placed in water and the mixture is melted at a temperature between 1300 and 2000 °C. Here, silica reacts with heat to form silicon metal. After this, the molten silicon metal is cooled, solidified, crushed into the right sizes, and finally packaged for different industrial uses, especially in the aluminum industry.
